May is Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month

Date: 05/25/2021

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder that affects the lungs and digestive system, causing cells that produce mucus, sweat and digestive juices to thicken and block passageways. CF affects nearly 35,000 people in the US and is characterized by several symptoms including cough, repeated lung infections, inability to gain weight and fatty stools. People with CF are also more likely to develop other health conditions including diabetes, liver disease, arthritis, reflux, hypersplenism and osteoporosis.

While there is currently no cure for CF, early diagnosis and effective treatments can help patients manage symptoms, improve functionality, and treat other health conditions that may develop. At Foundation Care, we recognize Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month in May as part of our ongoing effort to raise CF awareness.

As a national specialty pharmacy and CF center of excellence, we deliver specialized care to help patients living with CF achieve the best possible health outcomes. Foundation Care offers services that extend far beyond filling a prescription. Our team of pharmacists works closely with patients to help manage their disease and reduce barriers that affect adherence. We also provide support through patient assistance programs to help ease financial burdens.

  • Limited distribution CF medications and compounded respiratory medications
  • Prior authorization and appeals assistance
  • Benefits investigation and copay assistance enrollment support via copay cards and foundations
  • Patient and caregiver education on medications, equipment and CF-related diabetes (CFRD) management
  • Original educational materials used by CF clinics nationwide, including our Huxi coloring adventure book series

“Treatment regimens for patients with CF can be complex and prescriptions may come from multiple prescribers,” said Director of Pharmacy Rachel Wiechert, PharmD, BSN. “The pharmacists at Foundation Care aim to close gaps by ensuring prescribers are aware of the patient’s complete treatment regimen. This approach to care can prevent adverse events and optimize therapy benefits for our patients.”

Through our comprehensive offerings and strong relationships with the CF community, we can ensure that we are a valuable member of our patients’ health care team. Learn more about our approach to CF care management during Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month.
